He is a film shooter, too, and he was as excited as me for my new toy. The day after I bought it I jumped on the train to Rome to shoot the first roll with my boyfriend. I had just bought the camera and I feared something could be wrong with it. It’s a Contax and all the controls are well laid out. I was very worried before shooting my first roll. The Contax 645 is still popular with wedding and portrait photographers today due to its ability to use compatible digital backs and if you’ve got this setup, this would be the ultimate digital portrait system in my view.

The ones you mentioned are easily my favourite features of the Contax.

Ebay was literally full of Contax 645 bodies coming from Japan or US, but I resisted the temptation to buy one online from overseas because I wanted to verify its conditions and integrity. Here in Italy the Contax 645 is very hard to find: it was never very common because of it's high price, so I feared that all I could find was some tired and over-used ones from old photographers.

Unfortunately so many have been abused in decades past and are not that good a buy for unwary enthusiasts. Find a good, well looked-after specimen and use it but don't abuse it. a list that can be added to just about each day. Other problems include the shutter/mirror solenoid, winding mechanism, film counting roller, shutter speed derangement, corrosion of the battery compartment, delamination of shutter tapes. I would be cautious purchasing a Pentax 6x7 (1969 vintage) or the later Pentax 67 (1989) without a comprehensive review of mechanical operation the cameras are making regular appearances on service benches, chiefly for broken meter coupling chains (an idiosyncracy that needs to be fully understood, very especially by beginners using a P67 with the TTL meter). Whatever lens you put on a lot will also come down to the skill of the photographer in bringing the image through. Whatever system you buy into you must be prepared to go further and acquire lenses to broaden your photographic potential. There are still better lenses in the Pentax 67 line up than the stalwart, everyday 105mm, though it is a great starter lens.
